Twitter Influence in Entertainment
In the age of digital and social media, many platforms for online social communication have been prominent in daily activities especially in the entertainment industry. Facebook and Twitter both have celebrities participating on their platforms. These platforms have been an extension of the entertainers’ brand allowing them to interact directly with their fans. Their influence moves from big screen, records, and advertisements to status updates, Facebook contests, and tweets. With Twitter’s ability to have followers has proven to be an influential platform that translates to marketing dollars. The more followers one have, the higher the dollar value.
It is reported that Lady Gaga has 20 million followers making her number one and the first to hit 20M. Gaga is the “Queen of Twitter” (@ladygaga) and she has utilized her digital presence to create frenzy around her album. However with as many fans as she has on Twitter and Facebook at 48.8 M, who can blame her for using her channels to market her album. Mashable reports that the top 5 most-followed people on Twitter are all musicians to include Justin Bieber (18M), Katy Perry (15.7M), Shakira (14.5M) and Rihanna (14.4M). These artists have an overwhelming following, which contributes to their influence as well. These musicians have more followers than President Barack Obama (13M) and Oprah (9.9M). So how is their Twitter influence measured? There are different sites that measure Twitter influence i.e. Klout, PeerIndex, Twitter Grader, Twitalyzer, and Retweet Rank. More than likely entertainers are not necessarily using these platforms to measure their influence as much as they are converting their following numbers into profitable dollars.
As much as Twitter helps artists or other entertainers from film to sports broadcast their current endeavors, projects, films, or causes it can also spread negative information rapidly. A few entertainers have said things on Twitter that received negative reactions from their perspective communities. It is important for them to be cognizant of the feedback or influence they hope to reflect.
